Nasturtium tangle

Nowadays I don't do many oils, partly simply because I don't really have space to put them all while waiting for them to dry to the point where they can be packed away. But for some sorts of effects, nothing else will do. For many artists, oil is their "serious" medium; for me it's something to be playful with, and plaster on thick, juicy brushstrokes in uninhibited manner. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't, but I always learn some thing in the process.

Old door, Greece

 Acrylics on Masonite, 20 x 15 cm:

SOLD

The Japanese call it wabi-sabi: the beauty of imperfection, and of old, used and withered things. Everyone (except perhaps very rich people?) seem to get it intuitively, which is why still life paintings are so often filled with such old things. One wonders then why, in the west, billions upon billions of dollars are spent annually in an attempt to make ourselves look younger more perfect.

Mission Station, Tweespruit

Oil on Masonite, 20 x 25 cm:

SOLD

The Belgian-South African artist Frans Claerhout spent his last years here, in the small Free State town of Tweespruit. During his life, his art generated millions of rands. But as Catholic priest, he did not keep a cent of it for himself; it was all used in development projects in the community where he served, and he retired in humble circumstances, sharing a house with another retired priest. He died in 2006.

Early bird (hoopoe)

Acrylic on Masonite, 15 x 20 cm:

SOLD

I saw this hoopoe in the early morning gloom, looking for breakfast - the early bird does indeed get the worm. Took a quick reference photo or two. The light was so low that the photo came out fuzzy and grainy, but it was still suitable as reference.
