Nowadays I don't do many oils, partly simply because I don't really have space to put them all while waiting for them to dry to the point where they can be packed away. But for some sorts of effects, nothing else will do. For many artists, oil is their "serious" medium; for me it's something to be playful with, and plaster on thick, juicy brushstrokes in uninhibited manner. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't, but I always learn some thing in the process.

The Japanese call it wabi-sabi: the beauty of imperfection, and of old, used and withered things. Everyone (except perhaps very rich people?) seem to get it intuitively, which is why still life paintings are so often filled with such old things. One wonders then why, in the west, billions upon billions of dollars are spent annually in an attempt to make ourselves look younger more perfect.
